Choosing the right type of food for your fish starts with choosing the fish themselves. Not all fish can live together in a community. Some carnivorous fish as well as some omnivores can be aggressive and may treat their companions as food. Always research fully any desired fish before purchasing and placing in the community tank. Live plants can add beauty as well as provide fresh food for fish however, it is important to make sure the plant(s) are healthy for all members of the community.

For healthy, happy fish variety is the key. Giving the same food at every feeding can cause boredom and lack of interest in the food. Variety also offers a more balanced diet, some types of fish actually become more colorful with proper diet. If you are considering breeding keep in mind that many types of fish require live food in order to breed.

Live fish foods are best for all types of fish weather it is in the form of plant or animal. There are many suppliers offering a variety of live foods and they are one of your best resources for expert advice on which foods are best for which fish as well as for the community as a whole. Live food can be collected from your own backyard but unless you are certain that the bugs you collect are free from pesticides and harmful bacteria collecting live food yourself is not recommended. An inexpensive option to purchasing live food is to raise it yourself. Many types of live food are easy to raise and starter eggs and cultures are available at most pet stores and online.

The next type of food for your fish is frozen fish food. Again there are many suppliers of frozen fish food or you can freeze your own. If you decide to freeze your own there are several recipes online, be sure to mark the expiration date before freezing as you would food for human consumption. When giving frozen fish food never place it in the tank while still frozen, ice crystals can easily upset fish digestive systems. The easiest way to feed frozen food is by placing it in a container of tank water until completely thawed. Freeze-dried food is a good alternative to frozen food, there is no waiting for the food to thaw and it does not have to be kept in the freezer.

Lastly we have manufactured foods, namely flakes, pellets, and granules. Most fish enjoy flake food, it is popular with amateurs as well as seasoned aquarists. Flake food will generally feed everyone in the community. Flakes will float on top of the water for top feeders then gradually float down to feed middle and bottom feeders. Pellets basically come in two different types; floating and sinking. Large and medium size fish often enjoy both sinking and floating pellets. Sinking pellets are a must have for bottom feeders. If your bottom feeders seem especially hungry consult an expert, they may suggest supplementing their diet with granules. Granules may also be appropriate for other types of fish such as larger goldfish.
